What symptoms and behavior is the officer looking for during the initial detention at the scene of a DUI?

Return to FAQ Videos

The typical symptoms that police are looking for at the initial detention of any DUI case are the typical bloodshot eyes, odor of alcohol, slurred speech, fumbling with your wallet, things like that, that show impairment. The key is that those symptoms and observations can be caused by nerves from someone being tired, from any number of factors. But those are typically the factors that the cops look for in the initial detention to determine whether or not they’re going to proceed with a DUI investigation.
